On Friday, November 3, NPSC students were visualizing their creative process through learning hands-on art techniques with Marianne Vander Dussen.

The FIRST® LEGO® League program welcomed the artist and educator into the classrooms of 4 NPSC elementary schools (3 virtually) to learn about how students can innovate through creative expression, often through their own hobbies. Vander Dussen detailed how art can express itself through traditional visual mediums, like drawing, painting and crafting, to more other expressive hobbies like LEGO®, video games and sports.

The workshop had NPSC students listening and learning intently as they learned about historical artists, specific shading techniques and how hard work can often take time.

The students put this practice to paper by following carefully detailed instructions from Vander Dussen on how to draw a realistic human eye, while incorporating gradients and various line work techniques. The students were encouraged to put their own unique spin into their pieces afterword, to reflect their own vision of the project.

The FIRST LEGO League’s “Masterpiece” project aims to teach students how to innovate, communicate, engage with and entertain an audience, while learning what they can from the arts, through museums, theatres and films. Through learning with Marianne Vander Dussen, students were taught the value in engaging with others through the use of the arts in the hobbies and interests they love.
