This past fall, Nipissing-Parry Sound Catholic District School Board students participated in a “Level Up!” career fair in Sudbury, which allowed students to discover and explore a diverse variety of skilled trades through participating in hands-on activities. Inspired by this career fair sponsored by the Ministry of Education and Skilled Trades Ontario, the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program hosted a Baker-Pâtissier workshop to explore the hospitality & tourism pathway at St. Joseph-Scollard Hall (SJSH), for St. Theresa students in the junior and intermediate grades.

Students were provided a tour and presentation of the culinary spaces at SJSH, followed by a hands-on workshop in cake design with emphasis on frosting creation, fondant molding and cake design, culminating in decorating a cake in the style of a cartoon/comic appearance.

During this engaging learning opportunity, students were able to develop and pursue a stronger interest in and appreciation of the skilled trades, particularly the Baker-Pâtissier profession as a potential career pathway, and a greater understanding of the hospitality and tourism industry. Students witnessed the fruit of their labours from the day’s efforts by being able to take home and enjoy their cakes with their families and friends.
