Belonging in Community

This year's Carousel will be an interactive, in-person evening of networking and workshops focused on supporting children and youth. The collection of workshops will feature various topics from dedicated speakers/leaders. Each attendee may sign-up for 2 workshops for the evening, each workshop being 30 minutes in length, followed by a 15 minute Q/A session. We also warmly welcome you to join us at 5:30 p.m. to network and visit community partner information booths in the main foyer of SJSH!

The workshops are as follows:

Session A (6:00 p.m.- 6:45 p.m.)

1) Science of Reading & How to Support Your Child at Home: K-3 (w/ Samantha Andrusiek)
In this session you will receive information behind the science of reading and what your child will be learning in reading at school. We will share some fun interactive ways to support your child at home. There will also be time for you to ask any questions.

2) Navigating the Ontario Autism Program (w/ Paula Barnes and Carol Tremblay)
The Managers of the Autism programs at Hands the Family Help Network and One Kids Place will present a pathway to diagnosis, an overview of the Ontario Autism program in it's current state, as well as, available services and funding.

3) Mind Full or Mindful? (w/ Nela Pocztanski and Sydney McKnight)
This workshop will focus on understanding the mind-body connection in relation to mental health and well-being because the way you feel influences the way you think and vice versa! We will present the ideas of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, including mindful movement through yoga, breathwork, and guided meditations. Life can get busy and there is a need for intentional movement, quiet time, and stillness for everyone and it can start with modelling those behaviours at home or in school.

4) Supporting Students with Special Education Needs in FSL (w/ Tricia Renaud)
NPSC, with support from the Ontario Ministry of Education and the Government of Canada through the Department of Canadian Heritage, has developed a document entitled: A Parent Guide to Supporting Students with Special Education Needs in French as a Second Language. This document is the result of a research project with Nipissing University Professor Callie Mady. Join us to explore the benefits of keeping your child enrolled in the French program, and how to support them along their journey as second language learners.

5) Putting the Pieces Together (w/ Wendy Larouche)
Through the lens of an student with a learning disability, this workshop will highlight navigating the school system, exceptionality definitions, and the Identification Placement Review Committee (IPRC) and the Individual Education Plan (IEP) processes.

Session B (7:00 p.m. - 7:45 p.m.)

1) The Healing Power of Music (w/ Melanie Tremblay and Adam Driscoll)
In this workshop, you will explore the many benefits of music has on our mental health and well-being, as well as brainstorm ways we can encourage children and youth to use music as a coping tool.
"Music expresses that which cannot be put into words and that which cannot remain silent" - Victor Hugo

2) The ABC's of Emotional Vulnerability (w/ André McKennedy)
This workshop will discuss various factors that contribute to emotion reactivity amongst children and youth. In addition, guests will explore topics such as timing, dialectics, and validation to build healthy relationships within the home.

3) Autism: The Big Picture (w/ Mary Beth Debison and Cody Beavan)
The One Kids Place (OKP) Autism team will present a workshop covering the following: What is Autism? How prevalent is it? What are some common presenting issues? This workshop will support parents to understand behaviours, general ABA (applied behaviour analysis) and strategies to support children who have an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) diagnosis.

4) Supporting Challenging Behaviours (w/ Kate Ness)
This workshop will focus on the reasons why, how to collect data, and 1-2 strategies that can be used before challenging behaviours occur. This introduction to supporting managing behaviours is the first step in the process to understanding why challenging behaviours occur and what can be done to prevent them from occurring in the future.

5) Fun with Numeracy and Mathematic Foundations (w/ Sandra Carreiro and Kelly Madigan
This session will focus on the most important concepts and skills needed to provide learners from JK-6, with a strong foundation in mathematics, in ways that are fun for both children and their families. At the end of this session, you will have access to a bag of numeracy games that will help build confidence and understanding of fundamental math principles.
