Students Energize FIRST® LEGO® League

Students Energize FIRST® LEGO® League in 2022-2023
Posted on 06/23/2023
Building on the inaugural FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL) in NPSC classrooms in 2021-22, the momentum continued on this year where more classrooms excitedly integrated the Class Pack learning resource into their classrooms.

This year saw 250 students in 10 classes across NPSC schools, participate in using FIRST® LEGO® League Class Packs in grades 2 through 8.

This year's theme was focused on sustainable energy, titled "SUPERPOWERED". Students learned about various forms of renewable energy, while researching a topic of their choice and developing an innovative solution to a real world problem related to energy.

FIRST® Robotics recently adopted a more "classroom-friendly" mode of delivery for teachers interested in FIRST® LEGO® League, through the "Class Packs" version. FIRST® Class Pack resources prepare educators and facilitators to guide their students as they begin or continue a journey of STEM exploration using real-world scenarios and challenges. Content from the learning sessions align with expectations in the Ontario Language, Mathematics and Science curricula, and beyond. To celebrate students' accomplishments, Class Pack events are run at the school level.

"This is the type of integrated, cross-curricular, project-based learning program that is one of those ‘no-brainers’ for classrooms today” says Peter Anello, Technology-Enabled Learning Facilitator, Nipissing-Parry Sound Catholic District School Board.

“With the recent additions to coding in Ontario curriculum, expectations in mathematics and science, coding isn’t one of those 'fun extras' anymore; it's a tool that can be used for rich, relevant and meaningful learning. And the best part, teacher's don’t need to have any coding experience at all. They can be 'guides on the side' when it comes to coding, and learn alongside students through experience" Anello continued.

"The engagement levels are through the roof! Students are operating and working together in groups and coming up with an innovative project with something that's current."

The momentum continues for 2023-24, with 16 classroom teachers already requesting to integrate FIRST® LEGO® League in their classrooms next year.
