Insights and Sounds: A Celebration of the Arts

Students from St. Joseph-Scollard Hall will be showcasing their visual arts, photography, dance, music and more on Tuesday, May 7, 2019 as part of an annual public performance entitled Insights and Sounds. The evening will begin with a photography exhibit at 6:00pm, followed by music, dance, dramatic arts and video performances at 6:30pm. The show will take place in the Bishop Carter Auditorium at St. Joseph-Scollard Hall and tickets will be $5 at the door.

A note to all parents and guardians of Senior Kindergarten students. This year, all Senior Kindergarten students will begin school on Thursday, September 6, 2018. This is a change from our previous practice of Senior Kindergarten students beginning on the first Monday of the second week in September. Our Lady of Sorrows hosted a day of learning and celebrating through a series of engaging workshops and a pow wow in the afternoon. Other schools participated in activities such as mask making, pow wows, medicine wheel teachings and much more. Congratulations to Vincent Palangio, who won the first place medallion for the Science on the Wall-Primary Award at the North Bay Regional Science Fair this year. As part of the class unit on Matter: Solids, Liquids and Gases, Vincent used household ingredients to cause an exothermic reaction. He used the science and technology problem-solving steps when he encountered challenges to his hypotheses. Way to go Vincent!

Congratulations to St. Luke student, Alexandra Dech, who is headed to Ottawa to represent Ontario in Canada's History Youth Forum this October. Alexandra secured her spot after competing in the National Young Citizen’s Filmmaker Challenge last June. Thank you to everyone who watched, voted and helped spread the word about Alexandra's video. Students in the Learning Co-op program at the Nipissing-Parry Sound Catholic District School Board celebrated International Literacy Day through a series of engaging activities and group work, focused on this year’s theme: Living in a Digital World. International Literacy Day is an initiative developed by the United Nations to highlight the importance of literacy and to help raise awareness about modern challenges facing literacy education.

Summer Registration Information

Elementary schools are now closed for the summer months. If you require assistance regarding your child's transportation, registration or for new registrations, please contact the Nipissing-Parry Sound Catholic District School Board's summer registration office at 705-494-3888. Elementary school offices will be reopening August 28, 2017. St. Joseph-Scollard Hall will remain open through the summer months. All transportation and registration questions can be directed to student services at 705-494-8600 ext 3234. We wish you and your family a safe and happy summer.

National Aboriginal Day

To recognize National Aboriginal Day, our friends at Mother St. Bride joined the North Bay Indian Friendship Centre for a day of learning and sharing. Classes from Our Lady of Sorrows visited Nbisiing secondary school to take part in interactive activities and collaborative group work. To celebrate National Aboriginal Day during the month of June, approximately 100 Grade 6 students also visited Nbisiing Secondary School this past month as part of an annual retreat to share in a day of workshops and a group pow wow.

SJSH Recognized as Ontario EcoSchool

Congratulations to St. Joseph-Scollard Hall who successfully completed a year-long application process to become a certified Gold-Level Ontario EcoSchool. The S.O.L.E. (S.J.S.H., Outdoor, Leadership, and Environmental Studies) Program, taught by Terry Dubroy, the Science Club, co-led by teacher Jackie Laberge and several staff members took a leadership role in the Ontario EcoSchool application process.

St. Luke student, Alexandra Dech, is representing North Bay in the National Young Citizen’s filmmaker challenge. Alexandra won the Young Citizens Award at the North Bay Heritage Fair for her project about her family's heritage. Her video documents her grandparents' journey from Italy to Canada, featuring interviews with relatives and even a visit to Pier 21 in Halifax.
