Students at St. Alexander School have been bringing their learning to life by connecting virtually with experts in the subjects they are learning about in their classroom. The Grade 6 class has been tuning in to live broadcasts, orchestrated by Joe Grabowski of Exploring by the Seat of Your Pants, to hear discussions from astronauts, artists, physicians, marine biologists and many more. During each broadcast, students have the opportunity to watch Grabowski interview guest speakers and students have the opportunity to engage with the speakers by preparing questions. Each speaker’s presentation complements classroom learning with examples that include Leela Gilday, a musician from the Northwest Territories, who presented and sang for the class, as part of their learning on The Secret Path by the Gord Downie and Chanie Wenjack Fund. NASA Astronaut Jessica Meir who helped introduce the class to their unit on space, having returned from the international space station only months prior to the presentation to the class. The biodiversity unit was enriched by interviews with Phillippe Cousteau and the crew of the Pelican and Dr. Sylvia Earle, prompting each student to complete a presentation on ocean plastics. We look forward to hearing more about these ongoing virtual connections!
