St. Joseph-Scollard Hall Catholic Secondary School’s (SJSH) 2025 Outdoor Leadership and Environmental Studies Program (S.O.L.E.) has spent the semester working hard to maintain its platinum-level EcoSchools certification, the highest level of recognition for eco-friendly school initiatives in Canada.

For over five years, SJSH has partnered with EcoSchools Canada, an organization dedicated to helping school communities across the country promote environmental awareness and action. The program challenges schools to think creatively and engage their entire community in sustainable practices - and this year’s student leaders rose to the occasion.

This year’s EcoSchools leaders, Hannah Gignac and Kyra Bolton, have gone above and beyond to organize fun, hands-on activities that engage both staff and students. Their most recent initiative for Earth Day was a major success, featuring classroom challenges that helped students interactively learn about recycling, renewable energy, and waste conservation. Over 25 classes participated, making it one of the most widely embraced environmental education efforts at the school.

In addition to their classroom outreach, Hannah and Kyra organized an Earth-themed dress-down day to raise funds for the North Bay Food Bank. With strong student participation, they raised $923.48, which was proudly donated on Tuesday, April 29, 2025. Their efforts brought the school together in support of both environmental and social causes, highlighting the spirit of compassion and leadership fostered in the S.O.L.E. program.

We extend our sincere gratitude to the entire S.O.L.E. class, who played a vital role in making these initiatives successful. Their hard work and dedication reflect SJSH’s ongoing commitment to environmental leadership and community engagement to support those in need. The gratitude felt by all participants is a testament to the positive impact of student-led environmental action.
