The Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) has publicly released their 2023-2024 results, reporting for the third year on the student achievement results of its digitalized and modernized provincial assessment.
The results reflect the achievement of participating students across the Nipissing-Parry Sound Catholic District School Board (NPSC) in the Primary (Grades 1-3) and Junior (Grades 4-6) Reading, Writing and Mathematics assessments, the Grade 9 Mathematics assessment, and the Grade 10 Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) for the past three years.
As a result of the modernization of the EQAO assessments, the data sets
found here reflect the continuation of a new baseline of data both at the local and provincial levels, and are based on a digital administration, new EQAO assessment frameworks, a de-streamed mathematics curriculum, and changes in reporting. Additional details on our Board and school level results can be found below and on the
EQAO website.
The data from EQAO continues to play an important role in identifying trends to inform specific strategies in support of student learning. Over the coming weeks, our school teams will be using the contextual, achievement, and perceptual data that EQAO provides to inform intentional instruction tailored to support the needs of our students and student achievement action plans. The results of the EQAO assessment continue to provide board and school teams with invaluable information that is used in conjunction with multiple sources of data and a variety of assessment tools.
NPSC continues to prioritize foundational learning supports in the core academic areas of mathematics and literacy to support improvement in student achievement and the success of all our students.
“Upon reflection of the results, we are very pleased with the continuous improvement of success of our secondary students on the OSSLT with a 6% increase in the last 2 years, to 86%, and surpassing the provincial average. This is a testament to the dedication and commitment of our NPSC staff to support our students to reach their full potential. In order to foster continuous improvement, we have identified key areas in literacy and mathematics instruction to support improvement in student achievement along the continuum K-12. We will continue to support our staff to facilitate foundational literacy and mathematics instruction through professional development and training using key researched based strategies and tools.” shares Director of Education, Paula Mann.
In terms of Mathematics improvement in student achievement, it is important to note that key actions, strategies, and coaching targeted supports from our Numeracy facilitator team are in place to support teachers in their planning and instruction.
“We are beginning to observe, through a triangulation of data, that our priorities identified in our Board’s Math Action Plan are resulting in increases in student engagement and self-confidence in mathematics. We will continue to provide key supports such as coaching and professional learning to our teaching staff to support student engagement and achievement in mathematics.” shares Assistant Superintendent of Education and Board Math Lead, Derek Belanger.
We extend our heartfelt appreciation to our staff for their dedication and focused work to ensure our students experience success and reach their full potential.
