Labour Relations Update #8 - January 14, 2020

OECTA  Province - Wide Job Action

Dear Parents/Guardians and Community Partners,

As you may know, on Monday, January 13, 2020 the Ontario English Catholic Teachers' Association (OECTA) announced that its teachers will take part in a one-day, full withdrawal of services in schools across Ontario on Tuesday, January 21, 2020 unless a tentative provincial agreement is reached.

At the Nipissing-Parry Sound Catholic District School Board (NPSC), OECTA represents all elementary, secondary and occasional teachers.

As a result, all NPSC schools (elementary and secondary) will be closed to students on Tuesday, January 21, 2020.  Schools will re-open to students on Wednesday, January 22, 2020.

Parents and guardians are strongly encouraged to begin making alternate arrangements for children prior to the one-day strike. School transportation will be running but NPSC students should not board buses on January 21, 2020, as schools will be closed. Regular school transportation will resume on Wednesday, January 22, 2020.

Additionally, the following will be cancelled if the one-day strike occurs on Tuesday, January 21, 2020: all field trips, all sports and extra-curricular activities and practices, scheduled for before and after school hours.

All childcare including before-and-after school childcare programs and community use will continue to operate and remain open.  Please contact your school’s provider directly with any questions or concerns.

While we understand that the cancellation of classes has a significant impact on our families, we respect collective bargaining and are hopeful that a freely negotiated agreement will be reached soon.  We are not directly involved in provincial bargaining; however, the parties who are involved are working hard on our behalf to achieve an agreement.

NPSC will provide parents and guardians with updates and information as it becomes available through board and school websites (https://www.npsc.ca/news/labour_relations_updates), and social media (Facebook (/npscdsb) and Twitter (/npsc_schools).

We very much appreciate your understanding and thank you for your ongoing commitment to Catholic education. We ask for your prayers for a just and expeditious resolution to this matter.

If you have any additional questions, please contact your school principal.

Sincerely,

Anna Marie Bitonti
Director of Education
