May 5 is the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2SLGBTQI+ People (MMIWG2S+), also known as Red Dress Day. Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQI+ people face disproportionately high rates of violence in Canada. Today, we mourn the lives of those who have been taken, and stand in solidarity with survivors, families, and communities seeking justice, healing, and change.
As a Catholic school community, we are called to honour the dignity of every person. Let us reflect on the truths shared through the National Inquiry into MMIWG2S+ and recommit ourselves to reconciliation, awareness, and action in support of Indigenous rights and safety.
