After School Skills Development Program
Posted on 12/06/2017

NPSC is pleased to showcase a special After School Skills Development Program, which is being offered at St. Alexander School in partnership with One Kid's Place. The Program is for elementary school-aged students (Primary/Junior) with the diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). As part of their learning, students enrolled in the program have the opportunity to engage in activities which focus on building social skills.

The referral and admission procedure is a team approach involving the NPSCDSB Special Education Co-ordinator, Principal and OKP Program Manager. The program began in early October and a second block is scheduled to begin again in 2018.

Upon admission, a case conference with the student’s multi-disciplinary team is held to determine program activities and goals, which focus on social skills building (e.g., waiting, turn taking, sharing, communicating, requesting and responding). Some examples of specific activities may include:

  • Baking
  • Craft Making
  • Robotics/Technology/Lego
  • Arts and Music
  • Nature Camp
  • Physical Education
