St. Joseph-Scollard Hall Catholic Secondary School is a co-ed school that opened its' doors in 1985 when St. Joseph/St. Mary's Academy (girls) and Scollard Hall (boys) merged. The construction was completed in 1992 and it now offers a 250,000 square foot facility to the 900 or more students who grace its halls. It boasts a large double gym, a renovated chapel and a 550 seat auditorium. SJSH has an excellent staff of 100 teachers and educational assistants who work tirelessly to offer a full and rich program to students.
Our school builds a relationship with our community by giving to those who are in need. Each year the student body earns thousands of dollars for charities. Our senior students perform outreach services wherein they help the young, the old, and the needy. Our students will provide 1000's of pounds of food to the shelves of the local food bank and parish food cupboards. These events and activities supplement the religion courses that are a necessary part of student course selection at our school.
School facilities are made available to various community teams and our track is open to all elementary and secondary teams who need a place to practice.

How We Live Our Catholic Faith
Proclaiming and Living the Good News
"The Faith Dimension of St. Joseph-Scollard Hall"
As a faith-based Catholic Secondary School, St. Joseph-Scollard Hall provides our students with opportunities to develop spiritually as well as academically. This intent is captured in the motto which is prominently displayed in the front foyer: "Act justly, love tenderly and walk humbly with your God."
During the school year opportunities are offered for our school community to come together to pray and to undertake many charitable acts that emanate from our collective conviction "That in so far as you did this to one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did it to me" (Matthew 25;40)
Every day begins with prayer over the public address system lead by students. Often, students or staff request prayers for a special personal intentions or the prayer may highlight an international need or perhaps the liturgical season e.g. Advent or Lent.
Mass is often celebrated in our chapel for all grades. In addition, school masses are celebrated in the Pro Cathedral, our local Catholic church. Both staff and students work with the chaplain and presiding clergy to make these celebrations meaningful opportunities to pray and reflect together as a believing community.
In addition, special liturgies are prepared for Ash Wednesday, Holy Week, and Graduation.
These events and activities supplement the religion courses that are a necessary part of student course selection at our school.
Our school offers a wide range of courses in the core subjects as well as students complete four compulsory religion credits. Students are offered a rich variety of occupation related experiences which include co-op placements and apprenticeship opportunities.
Our Hospitality program prepares many students in their pursuit of work in the tourist industry careers and our articulation agreement with Canadore College allows them to earn college credits before leaving high school.
We are proud of the fact that our Gr. 10 Ontario Secondary School Literacy results are consistently in the top 5 in Northern Ontario. Students at St. Joseph-Scollard Hall can earn Bilingual Certificates within an outstanding French Immersion Program. Special High Skill Majors in Business, Hospitality and Tourism as well as Arts & Culture provide opportunities for students to extend their learning in these specialized areas.
Assessing Student Progress
Many of our graduates leave us to proceed to either college or university with great success. Our teachers participate in many provincial pilot tests in order to become aware of the most current curricular innovations. The variety of assessment techniques in our school is second to none and we continue to attract a high quality group of students who work to their potential.
Our school athletic teams often win the city championships or are in the finals. We strive to "win with humility and lose with pride". Our students make us proud whether they bring home the gold or they experience defeat.
Plans For The Future
We will strive to maintain and enhance the respectful and caring Catholic community which constitutes St. Joseph-Scollard Hall Catholic Secondary School. We will strive to continue to demonstrate our passionate dedication in inspiring excellence by educating not just the mind, but also the body and spirit, with curriculum rooted in the teachings with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
